Protecting Your Home from Storm Damage: 3 Important Steps to Take

Are you living in an area that is known for its harsh weather? Many of the storms that have occurred in your area in the past may have caused serious damage to homes and other properties. Unfortunately, that kind of damage can cost a fortune. If you would like to be prepared just in case another storm occurs within the next few months, there are some steps you should take to prevent as much damage as possible.

1. Use Shutters or Plywood for Your Windows

During some of the most severe storms, it is not uncommon for windows to shatter because of the strong gusts of wind. One way to protect your windows is to invest in hurricane shutters. You can use them to cover the glass and keep it from breaking or cracking even the slightest bit. If you are on a budget and looking for an alternative option, you can always measure your windows, cut out pieces of plywood, and then carefully install the boards over each window to ensure they are all protected in the event of a severe storm.

2. Install Steel Panels in Front of Your Doors

A violent storm can cause severe damage to your front door, whether it is made of wood, glass, or any other material. After you have installed shutters or plywood over your windows, it is a good idea to install a steel panel over you front door. If you have a door that leads to the backyard, you may want to consider installing a steel panel in front of that door as well. Because steel is such a strong and durable material, it should be able to withstand the extreme wind that may be blowing around in your area.

3. Cover Your Roof with Protective Tarp

It may sound like a tedious task, but climbing up on the roof and putting down a layer of tarp could help to protect the roof from becoming damaged during the storm. Unfortunately, the wet and windy weather can cause costly leaks and holes. If you cover the roof with a tarp, any water that doesn't roll off will sit directly on the tarp, instead of leaking through the roof.

Severe storms can certainly cause thousands of dollars in damages. If you would like to protect your home, consider taking these precautionary steps as soon as you watch the weather channel and find out when the storm is expected to occur.
